The style — we’ll call it Newport Classic Assemblage — is on full display at the Gardiner when you walk from the art-filled lobby into a very cozy, very green bar on the right. The 42-year-old Cushing wanted to distill elements of his Newport summers and life at the Ledges into the Gardiner House. As a result, the hotel has the spirit of a Newport home, but doesn’t try to recreate the buttoned-down aesthetic of the Gilded Age. Cushing knows a few things about a Newport summer, although his summers were anything but typical. If there were such a thing as Newport royalty, he could count himself among its ranks.
I find it strange that although Autograph Collection is my favorite Marriott Bonvoy brand, I think back on this Autograph Collection stay as being just “lukewarm”. I’ll chalk it up to the service and weather this time. With that said, I would recommend this hotel for staycationers, couples, families, and even bachelorette parties, and I’ll probably give it another go one day myself. With some minor tweaks, Lido House could have easily garnered top marks, but still – an 8 out of 10 ain’t bad. The hotel’s outdoor pool was hemmed in by the hotel, but was still a great place to relax and soak up the sun.

Whether it's indoor or outdoor dining you prefer, our hotel on Lido Island has you covered. Each cottage tells its own story and was uniquely decorated by one of five local interior designers chosen to give the spaces a sense of style and place. For example, the Balboa cottage, designed by Grace Blu Design, includes details such as hand-drawn tile flooring, brightly colored textiles and even a yellow clawfoot tub. Cottages each feature two bedrooms, a living area, a kitchen and a rooftop deck with fireplace.
Wherever you go in town, you see the name Howard Gardiner Cushing. After the artist died at the age of 47, his friend Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney raised the funds to build the Howard Gardiner Cushing Gallery in 1919 at the Newport Art Museum. His work ranged from impressionistic portraits to fanciful chinoiserie landscapes. The signature restaurant at Lido House sits exactly on the site of the old Newport Beach City Hall, which explains both the monochromatic sea of mayors’ portraits and the name, Mayor’s Table. Much like the coastal decorations, the menu at Mayor’s Table is focused on seafood and includes an elaborate raw bar. There’s also something to be said about a hotel endorsed by its effervescent cleaning staff at 10 a.m.
