Cushing’s great-great-grandfather, Robert, who earned his fortune as a tea and china merchant, commissioned Boston architect John H. Sturgis to design a Newport summer cottage (what the rest of us call a mansion) in the 1860s. His great-grandfather, Howard Gardiner Cushing, was a celebrated Rhode Island artist who rubbed shoulders with and painted members of the Newport elite when he wasn’t traversing Europe. The largest capacity event room is the Newport Lawn. Foot venue with scenic and unforgettable views of Newport Beach. Valet Parking may be accessed to the right of the Parking Garage entry.

Signs make it clear that dogs, boats, and picnicking are not allowed at this beach. Benches are provided for watching swimmers and kids at the park. The style — we’ll call it Newport Classic Assemblage — is on full display at the Gardiner when you walk from the art-filled lobby into a very cozy, very green bar on the right. The 42-year-old Cushing wanted to distill elements of his Newport summers and life at the Ledges into the Gardiner House. As a result, the hotel has the spirit of a Newport home, but doesn’t try to recreate the buttoned-down aesthetic of the Gilded Age. Cushing knows a few things about a Newport summer, although his summers were anything but typical. If there were such a thing as Newport royalty, he could count himself among its ranks.

I find it strange that although Autograph Collection is my favorite Marriott Bonvoy brand, I think back on this Autograph Collection stay as being just “lukewarm”. I’ll chalk it up to the service and weather this time. With that said, I would recommend this hotel for staycationers, couples, families, and even bachelorette parties, and I’ll probably give it another go one day myself. With some minor tweaks, Lido House could have easily garnered top marks, but still – an 8 out of 10 ain’t bad. The hotel’s outdoor pool was hemmed in by the hotel, but was still a great place to relax and soak up the sun.
